From the beginning of our history we have come across ten and hundreds of geniuses that have been underappreciated or considered stupid for their input into our world. Thomas Edison, Van Gogh, Gandhi, Galileo and… Justin Bieber. Every single person here has heard of Justin Bieber, if not where have you been the last 9 years? With 15 American Music Awards, 14 Billboard Awards, 22 MTV Europe Music Awards, 10 Much Music Awards, 23 Teen Choice Awards and a Grammy; he’s hard to miss.
Now, why exactly are these icons considered “misunderstood geniuses” or stupid?
Let us take Galileo, for example. His investigation of the laws of motion and improvements on the telescope helped further the understanding of the world and the universe. For years before Galileo’s discovery, scientists believed that the solar system revolved around the earth. Galileo was the first person that made the discovery that the solar system revolves around the sun. To do this successfully, he performed a vast amount of experiments to understand and prove his discovery further. He did this by experimenting with balls of different sizes and weights, he rolled them down ramps with various inclinations. His experiments revealed that all the balls boasted the same acceleration independent of their mass. He also demonstrated that objects were thrown in the air travel along a parabola. However, after all this experimentation, he was arrested by a Catholic church and put on trial because he went against religious beliefs of different religions of that time. Most religions at that time claimed that the earth was the center of the universe. He died while being under arrest but it was later discovered that his theory was, in fact, correct and it was the other people who were in the wrong.
Similarly, let us take Justin Bieber. A lot of people don’t like Justin Bieber for a few valid reasons like’ In 2013 he “lashed out” at a member of paparazzi, but that was only the start, later that year he was caught allegedly spitting off hotel balcony onto his fans. Two months later a video of him peeing in a bucket at a café in downtown LA went viral. And to end his amazing streak on January 23rd, 2014 he was arrested for DUI and drag racing in a residential area of Miami.
You must be thinking, “No Justin Bieber and Galileo are completely different and could have no similarities”
That is where you are wrong.
Of course, Galileo didn’t pee in a bucket and drag race but both icons were misunderstood. Take Galileo, in the process of developing his theory, he had to undergo various experiments to ensure it was successful. Even after being correct he was hated by society. It is the exact same concept with Justin Bieber, he has had to go through a jungle of experimentation with his life to be the best person he could be. Galileo was a “madman” who was making up crazy ideas to butcher a religion when in fact later he was proven to be one of the most influential people in all of history. Justin Bieber was a lost kid but now he is considered one of the most influential artists in our entire history.
The key point is that Justin Bieber was just a confused kid. Justin was thrown into the life of interviews, shows and photo-shoots at the young age of 13; a time where you are supposed to be going to high school, making friends and trying new things. By the age of 16, he was considered one of the biggest stars in the world. Justin’s actions were a consequence of his situation; he was separated from his family, his friends, his life. He has missed out on key foundations and fundamentals of life and it has clearly reflected in his actions. Now, none of these things is truly out of the ordinary for someone his age, but because of his unique position in pop culture, a magnifying glass is put on his every move. To his detriment, and to ours. A growing teen budding his wings under the harsh Hollywood lights? That pressure has crumbled many and will continue to do so if the industry of celebrity voyeurism is a major player in the game.
Flash-forward 5 years Justin is back on top of the world. Last year he embarked on his third world tour, where he made about $40 million, in counting. His triple-platinum album titled “purpose” is one of the most grossing albums of all time He won a Grammy in 2016 for his hit song “where are ü now”. He set 8 new Guinness World Records. To top it all off he was crowned the first artist in history to own the 3 top selling songs. and much more than that.
Every lesson, every vulnerability, every fear, every hope, fault or need, is in the public eye. Imagine a reality in which every stupid thing you did when you were 19 has documented proof. That is not a reality many, if any, of us, can imagine dealing with. In the intense pressure, how’s Bieber supposed to find his purpose?
So, what is the definition of stupidity? That ladies and gentlemen is a question which you can answer yourself. If you are the people who are calling these evident geniuses “stupid”, then who here is the “stupid” person?
However, in my opinion, the answer is, in the words of Albert Einstein: “The difference between stupidity and genius is that genius has its limits”
Both Galileo and Justin Bieber are geniuses, not stupid.
